Standing Otter Sculpture With Rusted Iron Finish
£350.00
Say hello to Erik Otter, the latest sculpture from my studio … he is a rather spendid and intricately detailed sculpture of an European Otter pup (Lutra Lutra). He has been entirely handmade in the far north of Cumbria using traditional techniques. Most of the reference material came from photographs of otters on Shetland, where they are known locally as a ‘Peerie Draatsie’.
At 14” (35cm) tall this almost life-size Otter statue has been produced in rusted cold-cast Iron (Iron and resin), and hand finished using rust accelerators, as well as wax pastes. The sculpture is equally at home inside or out in the garden, although a coat of lacquer is required to protect the finish outside (please chose between the interior or exterior versions at the checkout).
More detailed information can be found in the ‘description’ section below ⬇️
Limited edition – Inside or outside use* – Intricately detailed – Entirely Handmade
Please note that this limited edition is hand made to order and that there is usually a 4-6 week processing time from order to dispatch. Also, due to the rusting process, no two pieces will have exactly the same finish.

Our Erik Otter Sculpture would certainly create a unique focal point in any room or garden. He is a figurative representation of the much loved European Otter, Lutra Lutra).
The original Erik was hand sculpted in wax using traditional sculpting methods by me, sculptor Kirsty Armstrong. I have been a sculptor for more than 35 years and create my pieces in my home studio in north Cumbria, near the English/ Scottish border.
Erik is anatomically correct with my unique stylised fur detail applied over the top. He is being produced in small batches to order, and as a limited edition of 300 pieces in total.
Erik is available to order here exclusively via The British Craft House in a choice of four finishes. In this listing, it is cold-cast Iron, and he is also available in polished Bronze, Moonlit pewter, and a weathered verdigris bronze finish.
This Rusty Erik in cold-cast Iron (Iron and resin) also has highlights in Iron and ‘foundry bronze’ metallic wax paste, and all versions have enamelled eyes.
I use a moulding and casting company in the English Lake District, just 30 miles from my studio, to produce Erik. Once I have collected a batch of casts I then begin the process of bringing them to life. They are finished and packed by …just me… and everything is done by hand.
Erik’s vital statistics…
Erik is 14” (35cm) to the top of his head, making him almost life size for a 4-5 month old Otter pup.
He weighs approximately 6kg, and his packed parcel weight is a hefty 7.5kg
All variations are suitable for both inside and out, however, for him to go outside he must be sealed and so will require a coat of lacquer* to protect the finish from the weather. Please just tick the option box when ordering. *The exterior lacquer changes the dry ‘rust’ finish to a uniformly ‘satin’ sleek appearance…
In this listing only the ‘rusty Iron’ Erik is available. Please see other listings in my shop for the Bronze, Pewter and verdigris finishes.
From each Erik sold I donate an amount to the Hillswick Wildlife Sanctury on Shetland. I spent three years living on Shetland as a child, and went back there in September 2024. I took a a bronze ‘Erik’ up to Hillswick, where he now lives in the visitor centre. Hillswick is the only Wildlife sanctuary on Shetland and they care for rescued, injured and abandoned Otters and seals.
