Hand embroidered coastal wall hanging. Displaying a view from a beach looking out to sea. Lots of tiny french knot stitches make up the texture of the pebbles and stones being washed up on the shoreline. Embroidered on silk fabric and a watercolour background.

Total size of the hoop is 6 inches or 16 cm and it can be hung from the screw at the top of the hoop.

For this piece I have used some raw silk fabric that I had left over from another project. I love to use up all my spare fabric before I buy new. I always keep the fabric stretched on a hoop to keep it taught as it is much easier to sew on this way. While the fabric is taught I paint a light watercolour wash over the damp fabric. It is just a wash to suggest the colour of the area , so I use a light blue for the sky and a soft yellow/brown for the sand. Once the wash has dried and I’m happy with the result, I embroider the details on top. I filled in the sea area with lots of straight stiches, the sea foam is made from lots of French knots as well as the stones and pebbles on the shoreline. I found some lovely stitches for the shells, the limpet style shell is from a woven wheel stitch and a stitch I found to resemble a fan style shell.
I finish each hoop with a piece of felt attached to the back with blanket stitch.
