Hand embroidered seascape of crashing waves over a rock.
Firstly I made a watercolour wash on some calico fabric. I then appliqued the rock in place and added some hand embroidered stitches to the rock to give it a bit of texture. I love the effect the watercolour wash has had to show the sea and the sky, the effect has been created by sprinkling some salt over the wet paint. Therefore I didn’t want to cover it all with stitches, so instead a picked out a few areas to show the waves and direction of the water. I used lots of tiny French knot stitches to show the seafoam of the waves. Look out for the glitter thread that I have used on some part of the sea, I think it helps to convey the sun glistening on the water.
This technique I have used, combines both my love of painting and my love of embroidery.

I have used a wooden 6 inch embroidery hoop which has been neatly finished with a piece of white felt sewn on to the back using blanket stitch to hide the stitches at the back.
