Gingerbread is usually associated with the festive time of year; it dates back to Medieval times apparently and it is believed that Gingerbread men were associated with the court of Elizabeth I.
My gingerbread men are not just for Christmas, I decided that they should be for other times of year too!
I live in a very rural part of Lancashire with a view dominated by the iconic Pendle Hill which is associated with the Pendle witches. The whole area is steeped in their heritage and so Halloween is a very busy time of year. Every village really makes an effort with Halloween decorations. Events based on the tragic story of the 12 people accused of witchcraft and sent for trial, take place all year from guided tours to waymarked walks.
You can read more of the sad tale of the witches: here
I wanted to make a Halloween Gingerbread man decoration that could be brought out each year and be suitable for all ages, I love vintage Halloween postcards and they were a big influence, as were various films, you can probably work out which ones!
I hope you will agree that the result is rather cute and only slightly scary, they are hand embroidered with a skeleton and have a cheeky gingham bowtie. I also found some perfect fabric to go along with my Gingerbread men and so they are also available as a hanging decoration.
Thank you for reading and I hope to be writing again soon. x
