Pit Fired Vessel B

£75.00

Pit Fired Vessel

Approx Height  12 cm Diameter 8.5 cm

Growing up in the wilds of Wales, running free in the hills as a child and teenager has given me such a deep deep love of our amazing planet, all it provides and how beautiful it is. Sometimes that feeling can hurt.

For awhile, a few years back, we stopped everything in the UK and the birds came back to our gardens, the air cleared, kindness, understanding and generosity was abundant and many of us had more time.
With some of that time I learnt to burnish pots. Burnishing pots involves taking a smooth stone on drying clay and gently and slowly and mindfully rubbing and compressing the clay particles, the earth, into a high shine. As I did it I sat in the garden listening to the bird song and chatting to family. This little pot was one of the first I did this to during a strange time.
I fired this little pot. I wrapped it up with natural goodies from the earth and put in into a pit of fire.
Those earth elements have left their mark in a beautiful way.
Wouldn’t it be beautiful if we humans could leave our mark on earth in a beautiful way too.

This little pot is decorative only. It is neither water tight nor food safe so just enjoy looking at it and holding it.
Keep it clean with a dry cloth.

A ceramic vessel made from mud, water and fire.

Approx Height 12 cm Diameter 8.5 cm

A slow and beautiful way to make; unpredictable and a whisper from the the Earth.

First throw a pot on the potter’s wheel.

Next let it dry slowly to leather hard. While it is doing this make up some terra sig.

Paint the terra sig onto the pot and burnish in a slow and methodical way.. Repeat this several times until the surface of your pot is highly polished.  It can take many hours.

Dig a pit in the ground.

Collect wood and lay some in the pit.

Wrap your pot in  natural goodies and minerals and place carefully into  the pit. Sprinkle a mix of oxides and minerals into the pit before covering the pot in a pile of wood.

Light fire and monitor it.

Once the embers are really hot cover the pit in a sheet of zinc to limit oxygen to the fire.

Leave over night to cool.

Remove pot from the fire and gently clean with a soft damp cloth.

Polish pot with the same make of wax that was used to polish the diamonds on the Queen’s crown.

Enjoy the feel and the colours and patterns that have imprinted themselves for eternity onto the pot.

Take photos and edit them to the right size to show the World this pot and then Let It Go to a New Home.

This little pot is decorative only. It is neither water tight nor food safe so just enjoy looking at it and holding it.
Keep it clean with a dry cloth.
