Long Green Blue Cowl Scarf Handmade Wool Silk and Viscose Felt with Yarns: Kingfisher
£75.00
Kingfisher: inspired by the flashing blues, greens and orange of a kingfisher in flight over a summer pond. Created with soft merino wool, pieces of hand dyed silk fabrics, mohair and boucle yarns over clouds of viscose fibre which provide a fine sheen. It is cobweb light, easy to style – you can wear it as a single long loop or wrapped up cosy and close around your neck. Beautifully soft and lightweight as well as cosy and warm. A uniquely stylish gift of wearable art.
Measurements: 22cm x 196cm
Fabric Care: it is best to wash this scarf by hand if you can, or use the handwash setting on your machine with nothing else in it. The process of making felt involves warm water, soap and agitation. This is exactly what your washing machine does. There is a risk of further shrinkage if you agitate it further in hot soapy water. Using natural soap also helps it to keep its lustre and drape.
It can be spun to extract most of the water, or rolled in a towel and pressed (stand on it or ask the kids to jump up and down on it!) before hanging somewhere warm to dry completely. Finish off with a gentle steam iron to restore its shape and lustre.

My process: I create pieces inspired by my local environment and love to play with combining colours. A fine cloud of viscose fibres is laid out around a foam resist followed by a fine layer of merino wool, then a further layer of viscose fibres to give it a soft sheen on both sides. It has a lovely drape and feels soft against the skin. I really enjoy making my pieces interesting from both sides or fully reversible.
