Each piece starts with tracing the design onto glass, which is then scored and broken with running pliers (this is how glass is ‘cut’). Any sharp edges are smoothed with a grinder or hand tool.
The next step is to layout the cut glass against the pattern; inserting lead cames between each piece of glass to build up the panel. Once everything is lined up in place, all joints are fluxed and soldered, with a careful flip once the first side is complete to then solder the back.
After cleaning off the flux residue, each panel has to be cemented – this is what makes a leadlight waterproof and adds to its structural integrity. The leadlight cement is brushed between the glass and lead cames, with whiting applied to help the cement set. The process is followed on the back. An initial polish of the lead cames at this point helps create a darker finish to the lead. Every piece of glass has the cement ‘picked out’ to ensure a crisp finish against the lead edge. Each panel is left to fully set for at least 5 days before the final polish at which point the panel is ready to be packaged for posting.
This traditional method of leadlight construction is the same method used for stained glass windows.

Materials;
Glass, lead, solder, marine grade stainless steel rods.
Glass Characteristics;
No two pieces are ever exactly alike as every sheet of glass has its own unique characteristic when it is produced; be that in it’s wispy lines, bubbles and other textures. As such please be aware that any piece you order from me will always have slight variation from the example photographs. Before sending out your order I will send you picture(s) of your piece to ensure you are entirely happy with it. Please bear in mind that glass colour changes greatly depending how much light, along with the quality of that light, shining through it – every piece can look very different as the light changes throughout the day. I always try to ensure that my photographs capture a true likeness of the glass colour.
