We all know someone with a yarn stash and this tool can help sort out the floof mountain by easily measuring yarn thickness. This gauge offers a number of ways to measure the yarn.

Simply lay a length of yarn (not under tension) over and check which size correlates best.

WPI (Wraps Per Inch) is a traditional way of measuring the thickness of yarn, allowing you to decide if a yarn you have is suitable for using with a project.

The higher the WPI, the thinner the yarn. Conversely, the lower the WPI, the thicker the yarn. For example, a yarn with a WPI of 20 is considered a fingering/ lace weight yarn, while a yarn with a WPI of 5 is considered a super chunky yarn. These can then be checked against the numbers next to the written sizes on the gauge if you want to double check.

WPI is a useful tool for knitters and crocheters because it allows them to:

  • Compare different yarns: By knowing the WPI of two different yarns, you can compare their thicknesses and see if they would be suitable for the same project.
  • Substitute yarns: If you can’t find the exact yarn that a pattern calls for, you can use a yarn with a similar WPI as a substitute.
  • Check gauge: Gauge is the number of stitches and rows per inch in your knitting or crocheting. By measuring the WPI of your yarn and comparing it to the gauge specified in the pattern, you can make sure that your finished project will be the correct size.

Here are some tips for measuring WPI:

  • Wrap the yarn around the gauge without pulling it too tight.
  • Make sure the wraps are side-by-side without any gaps or overlaps.
  • Count the number of wraps within one inch.
  • Repeat the process a few times to get an accurate measurement.
  •

Wraps per centimetre (wraps/cm) is another unit of measurement used in knitting, crocheting, and weaving to describe the thickness of yarn. It refers to the number of times you can wrap the yarn around the gauge within one centimetre.

Why not keep one in your bag in case you see some gorgeous must have unlabelled yarn whilst out shopping and want to know the size?
