Crocus Meadow Scarf Wool and Silk Nuno Felt

£75.00

Crocus Meadow: a soft and lightweight fine wool and silk scarf in celebrating the first brave crocus flowers to push up through the cold earth and spread their petals in the warm spring sun revealing bright orange inside. Created with silk, fine merino wool and plant viscose fibres.

Measurements: 32cm x 188cm

Fabric Care: it is best to wash this scarf by hand if you can, or use the handwash setting on your machine with nothing else in it. The process of making felt involves warm water, soap and agitation. This is exactly what your washing machine does. There is a risk of further shrinkage if you agitate it further in hot soapy water. Using natural soap also helps it to keep its lustre and drape.
It can be spun to extract most of the water, or rolled in a towel and pressed (stand on it or ask the kids to jump up and down on it!) before hanging somewhere warm to dry completely. Finish off with a gentle steam iron to restore its shape and lustre.

I create pieces inspired by my local environment, in this case the crocuses growing through the grass on the little green across the road from my home,  and love to play with combining colours. I begin by hand painting the silk fabric, then I lay a fine layer of merino wool over it followed by plant sourced viscose fibres which add a lovely sheen. In the process of felting, the wool fibres penetrate the silk fabric and hold it in place, so that it softly ruches and gathers as the wool fibres shrink and mesh together. The whole process takes a couple of days because I need to dry out the felt before I can cut the holes. It is then re-wetted and worked to the desired length and drape. This is nothing like the coarse and stiff felt you see in shops that has come from Nepal. It has a lovely drape and feels soft against the skin. I really enjoy making my pieces interesting from both sides or fully reversible.
