Ceramic ‘Stirrup’ Pot
£30.00
This handmade historical reproduction is inspired by the ‘stirrup’ pots of the ancient Peruvian Moche culture; it would make an unusual addition to your ceramics collection. It is hollow throughout, with a stirrup-shaped spout connecting to the main body of the pot.
This style of pot was created by the Moche people who lived in South America on the north coast of Peru along the Moche River between 50 and 800 AD. The shape had a practical purpose – most of the land where the Moche people lived was dry desert, and the shape of this vessel slowed the evaporation of the liquid inside the bottle, and the bottle could be carried, usually over the shoulder, by a strap threaded through the opening beneath the stirrup.
The surface decoration of this pot has sinuous ridges and chip-carved dots, highlighted by a thin white ‘wash’ glaze. The opening of the spout is closed with a small ceramic stopper.
It is made from strong stoneware clay and glazed at a high temperature. The pot measures 18cm tall and 10cm wide.
Please note that due to the porous nature of the clay used, this pot is not fully watertight.
