This ceramic model celebrates one of the fanciest birds around – the crested auklet. With its black feathers, orange beak, white whiskers and a loose crest, the crested auklet stands out as a stylish sea bird. From the same family as puffins (alcidae), crested auklets are found in the north Pacific, making them one of a very select non-British bird in my collection.

Made from a heavily grogged white stoneware clay, decorated with coloured slips and stains and finally glazed in a high-fire glossy transparent, this ceramic model is designed to be hard-wearing and impactful. Like all my birds, the crested auklet is designed to be tactile and feels lovely in the hand, but it is not a toy. The crest of this bird is fragile, so care should be taken whenever it is moved.
