Ceramic And Woven Raffia Vase
£25.00
This mixed media vase incorporates two very different materials, ceramic and raffia. The contrast between the two materials highlights the best of both – the hard, shiny, glazed ceramic works so well against the soft, malleable natural undyed raffia. It would make a great addition to your home as a statement piece, ideal for displaying specimen flowers and when not in use, the unusual form makes it a delight in its own right.
The colourful geometric decoration of the ceramic part is inspired by a style of African art practised by the Ndebele people of South Africa, mainly practised by the women when painting their homes.
The lower part of the vase is made from strong stoneware clay and the upper section is hand-woven and stitched using undyed raffia.
The vase measures 15cm tall and 10cm in diameter. The vase sits on three sturdy legs, giving it stability on uneven surfaces.

This is a unique, one-of-a-kind piece uses ceramic and raffia together in an unusual and decorative way. The lower part of the vase is made from strong stoneware clay and finished in a brightly coloured slip geometric pattern, sealed with a shiny, transparent glaze. The upper part of the vase is made from individual strands of natural, undyed raffia, coiled and stitched by hand to complete the piece.
The vase can stand alone as a decorative object or can be used as a functional container to display dried or fresh flowers and grasses. The ceramic base is fully watertight and the raffia will be unaffected by contact with water.
Please note that the raffia section should be cleaned only using plain water and allowed to dry thoroughly between uses. If raffia is left in contact with water for prolonged periods it could become discoloured. For this reason, I recommend that if you use this vase as a container for fresh flowers that need a water reservoir, you ensure that the water level is below the raffia.
