I get these large scallop shells from my local fish mongers, sustainable at its best! They make perfect frames for strong images. These shells are decoupaged and hand finished with gold gilt. To make the shell very hard wearing, I treat them with a hard wearing varnish. This would make a lovely unusual gift for someone this Christmas.
A perfect ring dish or desk tidy.

Using recycled natural oyster shells from Englands best beaches, handmade at home. I started decorating shells many years ago, but soon had far too many! So decided to sell them, they are a labour of love. I really enjoy creating new and different ideas. I am constantly looking for new designs and decoration methods, paint, gilding, enamel and mixed mediums.
These shells make stunning gifts as each shell is unique as the decoration is different on every single shell. The oyster shell varies in so many ways, their shapes and bowls all have various characteristics, some are better for dark designs and some for lighter motifs.
Oyster shells are a by product of the food industry. They are also ground up and used in the poultry industry along with the horticultural sector. Obviously the shells need to be cleaned and prepped for sale, general they are scrubbed and left to soak in clean fresh water and then left to dry in the sun.
Most crafters buy them already prepared, so when they arrive, we can get crafting! I like to inspect them for damage and quirks! So the shape dictates which pattern will work. I paint all my shells with either white acrylic or pearlescent paint, sometimes I might use a cream or buff depending on the shell. Then I add the pattern and leave to dry. After several coats of varnish and several hours of drying, they are ready to ‘glam up!’ Gold paint or gilt depending on the effect I want. I often handpaint extra details in, grass, reeds, feathers etc. They are left to dry and hardened before being gift wrapped and sent to their new homes.
All my shells are gift wrapped with tissue and ribbon.
