Caring for your Silver Jewellery

At Jewellery by Linda I create every item with the utmost care and love and I package your jewellery personally, taking the same care, to ensure that it leaves me in tip top condition.  Silver jewellery should stay looking beautiful for years to come so long as you take care of it.

Precious metals tarnish due to oxidisation – like a cut apple when it turns brown.  This happens when it is exposed to oxygen (which is obviously in the air), but don’t stress.  Just follow a few simple steps to prevent a build up of tarnish:

·           When you invest in silver jewellery don’t save it for best! The tarnishing tends to get worse more quickly if you don’t wear it.

·           Take care not to get lotions and sprays on your jewellery – make your jewellery the last thing you put on (even after perfume) and the first thing you take off.

·           Always remove your jewellery before bathing, swimming, sunbathing or going into a hot tub.  Silver jewellery is particularly prone to tarnish and damage from pool chemicals, solvents, cleaning products and acetone.

·           Always remove your jewellery before you go to bed.

·           Store your jewellery separately in a sealed bag so that it doesn’t tangle, and away from sunlight.

If your jewellery becomes a little dull, just mix a few drops of mild dish soap with warm water and use the solution on a soft cloth to gently rub the item, rinse with clean water and buff with a dry soft cloth to dry it.

If your jewellery does become tarnished, simply use a silver cleaning cloth to bring it’s personality back.  Avoid harsh chemicals with gemstone jewellery as sensitive gemstones may be damaged.  The mild dish soap solution should be fine for most gems.
