Large Moongazing Hare
22cm tall large ceramic moon hares in turquoise & white raku glazes.
A ceramic raku fired handmade sculpture. I make these in a fabulous rich turquoise glaze that has random stunning copper lustre on some pieces with crazing on the turquoise areas, the white version has striking dark crazing contrasting against the smooth white glaze.
I make a smaller version of this piece also shown in my shop.
Raku is a low firing technique that originates from ancient Japanese tea bowl firing ceremonies, it has evolved over time by studio potters all over the western world with many subtle variations giving a wide range of unusual finishes from unglazed ‘naked’ raku to lustred glazes and vivid colours with matt copper glazes. My raku is fired between 1,000 & 1,150 degrees centigrade and taken from the kiln piece by piece red hot with tongs, they are placed on a bed of sawdust and we wait until we hear the distinctive pinging of the glaze, it starts to craze and then we bury each piece on the sawdust to cool slowly, taking them out of the sawdust is not the end of the process as we have to scrub a layer of carbon off the glaze to reveal the random crazing and lustres found on each animal. This random nature of the raku finish gives each piece a unique look meaning no two pieces are ever alike.
