A beautiful deep oyster featuring a little song bird nestled amongst pine cones and fir branches. The background is a glorious green with soft subtle hi lights. The edge of the shell is painted in gold. The reverse of the shell is particularly beautiful as it shows some lovely layering and how an oyster is made up.
A stunning gift for any bird or nature lover, a perfect ring dish or desk tidy
Length 12cms
Using natural, recycled oyster and scallop shells from England’s best beaches, handmade at home. I am constantly looking for new designs and decoration methods, paint, gilding, enamel and mixed mediums.
Original and eye-catching, a perfect gift for anyone who love the unique and unusual. These shells make stunning gifts as each shell is unique, the decoration is different on every single shell. The oyster shell varies in so many ways, their shapes and bowls, all have various characteristics.
Oyster and scallop shells are a by product of the food industry. They are also ground up and used in the poultry industry along with the horticultural sector. Obviously the shells need to be cleaned and prepped for sale, generally they are scrubbed and left to soak in clean fresh water and then left to dry in the sun.
Most crafters buy them already prepared, so when they arrive, we can get crafting! I like to inspect them for damage and quirks! The shape dictates which pattern will work. I paint all my shells with either white acrylic or pearlescent paint, sometimes I might use a cream or buff depending on the shell. Then I add the pattern and leave to dry. After several coats of varnish and several hours of drying, they are ready to ‘glam up!’ Gold paint or gilt depending on the effect I want. I often hand paint extra details in, grass, reeds, feathers etc. They are left to dry and hardened before being gift wrapped and sent to their new home.
The exact shell received will differ from the ones shown in the images, each shell is slightly different in colour and shape, but you are always welcome to get in touch should you wish to choose one from those I currently have in stock!
