Description
I love working from my garden studio. I threw this stoneware mug on my potter’s wheel and when it was leather-hard I turned the base to give it a neat finish. I attached a lump of clay and sculpted the seahorse while it was in situ on the mug creating the original style handle. I wrapped copper wire around the seahorse and painted it with liquid porcelain (slip). After an initial kiln firing (bisque) at 900 degrees C, turquoise ice glaze was painted in a watery effect around the mug, and the seahorse was painted using a soft white glaze. The mug then went back into the kiln to be re-fired at 1270 degrees C, over another 3 days. The copper hues show through slightly green where the metal has reacted with the porcelain.
Inspiration
For such a tiny sea creature seahorses are quite majestic. Because they are so difficult to spot, it’s a treat to have one of your very own everyday.
The majority of my work reflects my joy of diving and the deep blue. My pottery captures the mysteries of the sea, I’ve always had a Saltwater Spirit and love living by the coast. I want my art to invite you to touch and explore the forms.
Seize that sense of other-worldliness, a watery feel of sunken treasure.
Stoneware is extremely resilient and watertight.
This piece is foodsafe.
Wherever possible I use recycled packaging, it’s friendly to the environment and keeps the costs down. If this is a gift, please let me know and I will enclose a hand-written note with a personal message from you.
