Description
I love working from my garden studio. I threw both the body and the lid on my potter’s wheel and sculpted on the jelly frill. The tentacles are carved into the side of the jar and filled with turquoise underglaze. He went into an initial firing (bisque) at 900 degrees C for a few days, then I applied a speckled matt indigo glaze to the lid & frill, a glossy turquoise glaze inside and a clear glaze over the tentacles. Then he went back into the kiln to be re-fired at 1260 degrees C, over another 3 days.
Inspiration
I used to enjoy meeting jellyfish when I dived, that undulating motion and the ethereal appearance of their bodies are hypnotic. I included a puzzle lid because it reminds me of games we played as kids. The lid fits snuggly, if you discover the right direction!
The majority of my work reflects my joy of diving and the deep blue. My pottery captures the mysteries of the sea, I’ve always had a Saltwater Spirit and love living by the coast. I want my art to invite you to touch and explore the forms.
Seize that sense of other-worldliness, a watery feel of sunken treasure.
Stoneware is extremely resilient.
