Unique Handmade Ceramic Beach Hut Clock

18Dia (cm)

Lazy days at high tide…

These beach huts are a bit boozy, the glass in the outer roofs is from a certain turquoise Gin bottle and the roof in the middle is full of a reclaimed sherry bottle. The beach has brown wine bottle glass to make it glisten. When the light catches the glossy glazes and glass this seascape sparkles.

Feel the sea breeze in a pot…

I love working from my garden studio. This clock is slab built, with sculpted relief details. The groynes and left door have been left as raw clay to give them a rough biscuit texture. Where the sea breaks at the shore and against the groynes I have painted in a bright white porcelain. After an initial kiln firing (bisque) at 900 degrees C, I glazed it with a soft turquoise sky and deep turquoise sea, I smashed the Bombay Sapphire and Harveys Bristol cream bottles and inserted shards of glass which melt then go into thermal shock, creating a gorgeous crackled effect. The clock then went back into the kiln to be re-fired at 1260 degrees C, over another 3 days.

I walk along the beach most days and I’m always envious of the beach hut owners, it brings back memories of childhood holidays.

The majority of my work reflects my joy of diving and the deep blue. My pottery captures the mysteries of the sea, I’ve always had a Saltwater Spirit and love living by the coast. I want my art to invite you to touch and explore the forms.

Seize that sense of other-worldliness, a watery feel of sunken treasure.

Stoneware is extremely resilient. It is quite a heavy piece, and although there is a hanging bracket on the back of the mechanism, I have included two discrete holes to hang which will be more secure.

The quartz clock mechanism is silent, and takes an AA battery. I do not ship with the battery installed because the hands will need to be kept motionless during transit.

Wherever possible I use recycled packaging, it’s friendly to the environment and keeps the costs down. If this is a gift, please let me know and I will enclose a hand-written note with a personal message from you.
