Description
A fibre art sculpture of a giraffe. When I started this piece I was fully expecting to make the whole giraffe, but realised the error of my ways when the head turned out to be much larger than planned.
The head is made wholly of hand needle-felted wool, with a plastic eye. A wire support runs up through the head to hold it in place on its wooden slice stand. The piece is around 30cm tall.
Needlefelting is the process of felting wool using a special barbed needle. As the needle is plunged into the wool, the barbs catch the wool fibres, pulling them into the centre of the piece, and matting or felting the fibres. This technique can be used to create 3D sculptures and can also be used to create 2D wool ‘paintings’.
