This A4 sized print is taken from a pair of original watercolour and ink illustrations created for my Butterflies of Britain series.
I have placed the upper wing and underwing views next to eachother and titled and initialled underneath the image in pencil. It is signed in pencil on the back.
The Common Blue butterfly (Polyommatus icarus) is a small butterfly and the most common of the Blue family. They vary somewhat in size and colour according to their location. They are widespread throughout the British Isles, being absent only from the North Shetlands and mountains above 500m. Irish and Scottish females tend to be significantly larger and can sometimes be mistaken for Large Blues. They can vary in colour from an all over violet blue to dark brown with the merest tinge of blue near the body. The male butterfly has a bright blue unmarked upper wing whereas the female has the eye catching orange crescents. Both sexes have orange crescents, and black dots with white halos on the underwing. The caterpillar’s main food plant is the Bird’s Foot Trefoil so butterfly colonies tend to populate areas where this is abundant, such as cliffs and dunes, heaths, wasteland and downs where grass is short and land unfertilised.
This is a digital print on sturdy 189gsm matte paper printed with Epson Ultrachrome HD inks. The print is unmounted and will be packaged with an acid-free board backing in a compostable cello bag.
