Ceramic & Woven Raffia Bowl

£30.00

This colourful bowl uses two very different materials, ceramic and raffia. The contrast between the two materials highlights the best of both – the hard, shiny, glazed ceramic works so well against the soft, malleable natural undyed raffia. It would make a great addition to your home as a statement piece, ideal for storing and displaying a variety of things and when not in use, the unusual pattern and form makes it a delight in its own right.

I have pictured the bowl as an egg storage bowl, but it would work just as well as a bowl for fruit or nuts, a trinket bowl, a container for a houseplant or any one of a hundred different uses.

The colourful geometric decoration of the lower ceramic part of the bowl is inspired by a style of African art practised by the Ndebele people of South Africa, mainly practised by the women when painting their homes. The upper section is hand-woven and stitched using  strands of undyed raffia.

The lower part of the bowl is made from strong stoneware clay, painted by hand and glazed with a shiny transparent glaze.

The bowl measures 13cm tall to the top of the handles and 15cm in diameter at the widest part.

The lower part of the bowl is made from strong stoneware clay and finished in a brightly coloured slip geometric pattern, sealed with a shiny, transparent glaze; the upper part of the bowl is made from individual strands of natural, undyed raffia, coiled and stitched by hand to complete the piece.

The bowl can stand alone as a decorative object or can be used as a functional container. The ceramic base is fully watertight and the raffia will be unaffected by contact with water.

Please note that the raffia section should be cleaned only using plain water and allowed to dry thoroughly between uses. If raffia is left in contact with water for prolonged periods it could become discoloured. For this reason, I recommend that if you use this vase as a container for liquids, you ensure that the level is below the raffia.
