Little green Studio. Meet the artist

Hi I’d like to introduce myself and tell you a little more about my life as a ceramicist. I set up my studio in 2018 to be a full time maker so you might wonder what I have been doing before that, so I’ll give you a quick back story. I started making pots when I was doing my degree (I don’t like to say how long ago) at Staffordshire university. I actually thought I wanted to be a graphic designer and on the multidisciplinary course my preference was for the surface pattern and product design departments but after doing a module in ceramics there was no going back, I was smitten! I think the way that I now approach making in clay is more as a designer than a studio potter and I can’t hide my love for the decorated surface and refinement of form. I then spent many years as an Art teacher in secondary schools which I loved but when the desire to make my own work became too insistent to ignore I knew I had to make the change. With two nearly grown up daughters, a very supportive husband and the lucky find of a second hand kiln and wheel at an auction there was no reason not to go for it so I “retired” as a school teacher. My little green studio is in my back garden in Haslemere in West Sussex just on the border with Surrey and I love living and working there. When it’s allowed again I’m looking forward to teaching some more classes and welcoming visitors to chat about my work. Hopefully this year I will be exhibiting at some craft fairs and shows and any details of events will be up on my website and social media. It would be lovely to meet some of you in person.
